Overview
Flamin GO is a game concept that my team and I have created over a span of 9 weeks.
It is a game that features, Alfie, a one-legged chicken that is in charge of piloting a specially modified airship that transports passengers around the world. The airship is called Flamin’Go (pun intended) a trusty air ship that has cannons and ability to breathe out flames to defend itself.

Research
To get a sense of direction for we want for the game and the kind of art style we are going for, we look up the different type of genres for a game and information about art styles in a game and how they matter or affect the entire game. We found out that the art style of a game is really important and it could make a break a game. A list of art style that we felt was ideal for the game we had in mind was complied.
We wanted to design a bipedal animal and decided to base our animal on a chicken. A collection of chicken references was collected and we practiced and learnt the basic anatomy of the chicken so that we could use our knowledge to design our character.

Prototype
Once we had a core idea of what we wanted, we began sketching possible designs for the character and related assets.
The first prototype/design we had for the character was that it was a chicken that travels the land selling chicken meat. He was supposed to be alike to a black market dealer and selling his own races' body parts. He uses veggies to hide the meat that he is carrying around and is missing a leg as he used it as food when he was just starting out this business. However along the process, the idea of him being a black market dealer was scraped. Instead, we decided to go with a lighter tone. |
As we change the idea, we also changed the type of transportation the character is using.
Before, the character travel around in a cart where he hides the meat. Now, he uses an airship to transport passengers around the world. His backstory was also changed. He still has one leg as he lost the other in a part with air pirates.
Quick sketches of airship ideas were produced where afterwards the team would meet up and decide on the design they like best. Number 5 was chosen and the wings were changed slightly so it resembles a bird more.
Thinking as it was a ship that had to battle against pirates, a joke idea was to have the ship breathe fire. To my surprised, the team liked the idea and it became a huge part of the project and design.

Results
After the research, sketching and prototyping, we have arrived Alfie, the chicken that transport passengers around the world in his airship that can breathe fire down upon his enemies.
The airship mostly stayed the same with the thumbnail design with some minor changes. Cannons were added to aid in fighting and the "beak" was changed so that the fire has better accuracy when blown out. Props were also designed to be placed on the ship. The character was also fully rendered with a painterly style which we felt would suit the game. |
Lastly the screen design was completed. However there were a few variations of it that was visually appealing and hence the team had to gather once again to choose one.
The screen design was decided and done pretty late into the project as we had to focus on designing the character and props first. Fortunately, the screen design did not take as long as the character to research and for the team to agree to a layout. As usual references was searched for and compiled. The screen design was finally chosen after careful selection. We felt that this gives off the best vibe that we were going for without it being too fantasy or "dark" looking. |
